Premiered at the Queensland Performing Arts Centre in Brisbane on 22 December 2020, this production marks the franchise's first major theatrical expansion and one of the most ambitious large-scale puppet projects to emerge from Australia in recent years. The principal puppets —Bluey, Bingo, Bandit and Chilli— are human-sized, hand-sculpted in foam over internal steel frames by the Blanck Canvas team, and required more than 6,500 hours of hand-sewing. Nine puppet artists also built over 70 props, including electric pieces and smaller puppet figures, within a set designed by Jonathon Oxlade that recreates the Heeler family home and garden in three dimensions.

The manipulation technique is a hybrid form of Japanese bunraku adapted to animated movement: each principal character requires two puppeteers visible on stage, one operating the head — with internal mechanisms for eyes, eyebrows and mouth — and a second handling arms and feet via rods. Puppet director Jacob Williams, whose credits include King Kong Live on Stage, engineered the system to replicate details as specific as the tail-wag distinctive to each dog breed, and trained over 60 performers in these skills, helping to build a new generation of puppeteers in Australia. Artistic director Rosemary Myers made the deliberate choice to keep the puppeteers in full view, drawing on bunraku aesthetics to foreground the human effort behind the illusion. Character voices are the original television cast recordings, synchronised live with the puppets' on-stage movement.
