Synopsis
Hurvínek and Mánička eagerly await the arrival of St. Nicholas, but the absent-minded Mr. Spejbl has forgotten the gifts. They decide to dress up as the devil and St. Nicholas themselves to surprise their father and grandmother. However, Grandma reminds Mr. Spejbl of the forgotten event, leading to humorous chaos when there are more devils than there should be. It's a fairy tale full of suspense, songs, and winter fun.
Context & Trivia
This 2010 Czech puppet feature film was released to mark the 90th anniversary of the Spejbl and Hurvínek puppets. It was the first time in Czech cinematography that 3D technology was used for a film. Spejbl, a disgruntled teacher, was created in 1920 by Josef Skupa, and his son Hurvínek, a sometimes lazy, sometimes hyperactive son, in 1926. Skupa's success with the two puppets was enough for him to establish a dedicated venue, the Spejbl and Hurvínek Theatre, in 1930—the first professional puppeteer's stage in Czechoslovakia. The Spejbl and Hurvínek puppets are iconic figures in the world of Czech puppetry tradition, known for their humor and satire. Their plays have been translated into over 18 languages and have toured numerous countries. Spejbl was carved by Karel Nosek in 1920 following Skupa's design, and Hurvínek was carved by Karel Nosek's nephew, Gustav Nosek, in 1926. The voices for Spejbl and Hurvínek were originally performed by Josef Skupa, who provided Spejbl with a mumbling bass and Hurvínek with a staccato falsetto. After Skupa's death, Miloš Kirschner took over the roles, and subsequently, Martin Klásek became the voice of both characters.
