Synopsis
Dr. Teeth and the Electric Mayhem tear through a funk cover of Kool & the Gang's «Jungle Boogie» while Sam the Eagle tries to hold his ground — and fails, measure by measure. The band owns the music; Sam carries the story, right up to a final reveal that reframes everything he just surrendered to.
Context & Trivia
The Electric Mayhem first appeared in 1975 in The Muppet Show pilot, «Sex and Violence», with Jim Henson, Frank Oz, Jerry Nelson, Richard Hunt, Dave Goelz and Steve Whitmire as the original performers of Dr. Teeth, Animal, Floyd Pepper, Janice, Zoot and Lips. In this 2015 video, the band is performed by Bill Barretta (Dr. Teeth), Eric Jacobson (Animal), Matt Vogel (Floyd Pepper), David Rudman (Janice), Dave Goelz (Zoot) and Peter Linz (Lips) — with Goelz the sole performer carrying direct continuity from the original lineup, four decades on.
On the design side, Animal was built by Jim Henson, Zoot by Bonnie Erickson, and Floyd and Janice by Michael K. Frith. A lesser-known detail: Animal's drum fills in the original pilot were physically executed by British jazz and big-band drummer Ronnie Verrell. Sound mixing, sound design and ADR for this video were handled by RacketSound.
