Synopsis

Henry Kosta is a middle-aged ventriloquist who never stands up for himself — until his puppet Moxxy starts speaking on his behalf. What feels like a strange liberation escalates from verbal confrontation to outright violence, as Moxxy grows increasingly uncontrollable. The line between who holds whom begins to blur.

Context & Trivia

Moxxy is a homemade ventriloquist puppet, and that handcrafted origin is central to its on-screen impact. The puppetry was praised for its deliberate progression: early in the film Moxxy appears stiff and lifeless, mirroring Henry's passivity, but gradually acquires a threatening presence made all the more unsettling by its limited facial expression — the frozen features become a tool of horror rather than a technical constraint. The voice was performed by Les Claypool, bassist and co-founder of Primus, lending the character a distinctively off-kilter vocal quality. Directed by Larry Longstreth and premiered on October 2, 2014 at The Kent Stage, the film sits within a lineage of ventriloquist-puppet horror — explored also by James Wan in Dead Silence (2007) — in which the puppet serves as an externalized, unrestrained alter ego for its operator.
