Synopsis
The Zero-X spacecraft is built to carry a crew to Mars, but sabotage derails its first launch. On the second attempt, International Rescue monitors the mission closely — and what the astronauts find on the red planet turns out to be a problem of its own.
Context & Trivia
Thunderbirds Are Go was filmed in Supermarionation, the electronic lip-sync marionette technique Gerry and Sylvia Anderson had already used on the original Thunderbirds television series. For the big screen, the production (shot at AP Films' studios on the Slough Trading Estate, with location work in Portugal, March-June 1966) switched to widescreen and filmed the puppets from a lower, closer angle than the TV series to keep their control wires out of shot. David Lane directed from a screenplay by Gerry and Sylvia Anderson, who also produced; despite positive reviews for the puppetry, the film underperformed at the box office.
