Synopsis
In this Grammy-winning music video for the 1986 single, Genesis appear as grotesque puppets built by Spitting Image creators Peter Fluck and Roger Law. The clip unfolds as a surreal dream sequence starring a caricature of US President Ronald Reagan, who falls asleep beside his wife Nancy and a chimpanzee before a mixed-up button sets off a mock nuclear apocalypse. Along the way, puppet versions of world leaders and celebrities, including Mikhail Gorbachev, Muammar Gaddafi and Bob Dylan, wander through Reagan's satirical dreamscape. The video won the Grammy Award for Best Concept Music Video in 1987, the only Grammy Genesis ever received, despite none of the band members appearing on screen.
Context & Trivia
Phil Collins commissioned Spitting Image creators Peter Fluck and Roger Law to build a full set of puppets, around $10,000 each, after seeing his own caricature on their British satirical TV show. The puppetry-driven satire of Cold War politics earned the video the Grammy Award for Best Concept Music Video in 1987.
