Synopsis
A behind-the-scenes look at how the National Theatre Studio and South Africa's Handspring Puppet Company brought Michael Morpurgo's novel War Horse to the stage, built around the life-sized horse puppets each operated by three or four puppeteers.
Context & Trivia
Directed by David Bickerstaff and Phil Grabsky, the film follows the National Theatre production from conception to stage, with Morpurgo himself discussing his inspiration and exclusive access to the actors operating Handspring's puppets. The play went on to win the 2011 Tony Award for Best Play.
