The series is known for its surreal and sometimes grotesque humor, utilizing puppets to bring its characters and situations to life.
Context & Trivia
Mr. Meaty was created by Jamie Shannon and Jason Hopley, who also serve as the puppeteers and voice actors for the protagonists, Josh Redgrove and Parker Dinkleman. The series originated as a collection of seventeen three-minute shorts that aired as interstitials on Nickelodeon in the United States and CBC Television in Canada between 2002 and 2005. A pilot episode, featuring material from the shorts, aired on December 30, 2005. The full series officially premiered on September 22, 2006. The Mr. Meaty puppets were custom-designed and built in-house by Shannon and Hopley, who founded The Grogs puppet company in 1994. Close to a hundred puppets were built for the series, with a team of puppeteers working together to bring depth to the characters. The foam latex puppets, with their bug-eyed features and uncanny proportions, contribute to the show's unpolished and sometimes repulsive aesthetic, distinguishing it from more polished children's programming. The show was specifically designed for a teenage audience, with executive producer Jack Lenz comparing it to Mike Judge's "Beavis and Butt-Head". Hopley has cited "The Ren & Stimpy Show" as an inspiration for the series' style of humor. The series moved to Nicktoons Network in March 2007 and concluded on May 23, 2009.
