Tom Servo, Crow T. Robot, and Gypsy returned for this Netflix revival with significantly more sophisticated construction than their original incarnations. The classic puppets were built from improvised household objects; the 2017 versions benefited from a larger budget and 3D printing, achieving greater articulation throughout: Tom Servo's arms, previously simple springs, now feature a solid core allowing them to rotate; Crow's arms and hands are fully articulated; and Gypsy, once severely limited in mobility, floats down from the ceiling. Despite these technical upgrades, the design of all three robots was kept deliberately faithful to the originals so they would read, at first glance, as beautifully made versions of the classic puppets rather than redesigns.

The most significant development from a puppetry craft perspective was the formal separation of voice performance and physical manipulation. In earlier seasons, voice actors also operated their own puppets. In 2017, Baron Vaughn (Tom Servo), Hampton Yount (Crow T. Robot), and Rebecca Hanson (Gypsy) remotely controlled their characters' mouth movements while a dedicated team of professional puppeteers handled the physical animation of the bodies. Creator Joel Hodgson explained this division was driven by the tight production schedule and the need for specialist puppeteers to ensure smooth, consistent performance.

The earliest inspiration for these characters traces back to a small piece of local television history: a puppet cat named Albert the Alley Cat who delivered the weather forecast on Milwaukee TV during Hodgson's childhood. That modest regional memory has quietly shaped these robots from the original series through to this revival.
