Context & Trivia

The documentary "Pepe García, the Puppeteer" pays tribute to José Lucas García, the first professional puppeteer of Mar del Plata, who dedicated over 40 years to this art form. Pepe García, born in San Miguel de Tucumán in 1933, began his puppetry career in Mar del Plata in 1966, after leaving his administrative job at YPF. He was known for his characters such as Foforito, El diablo Pata fría, and Josefina the giraffe. Pepe García's puppetry tradition continues through his children, Pablo and Cristina García, who accompanied him in his shows and formed the group "Los 4 Gatos," which is still active today. Pablo García, at just 10 years old, performed his first puppet show, filling in for his father at Sacoa. Cristina García, in addition to being a puppeteer, studied Chemical Engineering. Pepe García used hand puppets and glove puppets, and had a room full of them, rotating them to create new stories.
