Synopsis

A documentary that traces the fraught history of American puppetry alongside an intimate portrait of puppeteer Dan Hurlin, who spends two years creating an experimental puppet play, "Disfarmer," about an eccentric Depression-era photographer.

Contexte et anecdotes

Directed and edited by David Soll, the film interweaves three threads: verité footage of Hurlin's two-year development of his puppet play "Disfarmer", a survey of puppetry's marginalized place in American culture (long ranked, per interviewed experts, just above mime among despised art forms), and a debate about whether puppets can be more expressive than live actors. It premiered at DOC NYC in November 2010.
