Synopsis

A fire at Hooper's Store leaves Elmo shaken and full of questions he can't quite put into words. Maria takes him to FDNY Engine Company 58 / Ladder Company 26, where Firefighter Bill walks him through the truck, the gear, and what the job actually looks like day to day. Elmo — puppet nerves and all — even slides down the firehouse pole, and gradually finds that understanding what firefighters do is what makes the fear manageable.

Context & Trivia

This 2002 Sesame Workshop special was made in response to the aftermath of the 9/11 terrorist attacks and is dedicated to Lt. Robert B. Nagel FDNY. The main storyline of the video is the same as that of Sesame Street Episode 3981, the Season 33 premiere. Elmo, a Muppet-style puppet performed by Kevin Clash, is the protagonist, and through his experience at the firehouse, children learn about fire safety. The special also features a new "Elmo's World" segment about firefighters, which would not air on television until Season 34.
