Chica was created exclusively for the Sprout network, where she first appeared in the puppet segments of 'The Sunny Side Up Show'. Her final design was the work of Victoria Ellis, and her distinctive communication style — a series of squeaks and squawks understood only by the characters around her — was conceived and performed by puppeteer and voice actor Forrest Harding. The character's appeal proved immediate enough that Chica merchandise sold out in stores, directly prompting the development of her own series; Sprout later produced a promotional video titled 'Behind the Squeak' to document her origins.

The puppet ensemble includes Chica's parents: Mrs. C, performed by Ali Eisner with voice work by Jennifer Barnhart, and Mr. C, operated by John Kennedy, who also served as the production's puppet captain. Additional puppet characters include Bunji, a rabbit performed by John Taylor, and Stitches, a rag-style character voiced by Mario Lopez. Produced under the Sprout Originals banner, the show debuted on October 31, 2012, and ran for two seasons totalling 26 episodes, with its final installment airing in December 2014.

The series nearly took a very different shape: the original concept, titled 'Chica's Farm Fresh Show', was set in a farmers' market and centred on nutrition and healthy eating. It was Chica's organic following among young viewers that steered the project toward the costume-shop format and the hybrid puppet and animation structure that ultimately reached screens.
