Synopsis
An old Storyteller (John Hurt) sits by a fire and retells obscure European folk tales to the audience and to his talking dog — a realistic puppet performed and voiced by Brian Henson, standing in for the viewer. Each half-hour tale blends live-action human actors with creatures built by Jim Henson's Creature Shop.
Context & Trivia
Created for NBC, where it premiered on 31 January 1987, the series was written by Anthony Minghella, with music by Rachel Portman. Of its nine half-hour episodes, four aired as standalone specials and five were folded into The Jim Henson Hour; two were directed by Jim Henson himself. The Storyteller's dog is a realistic puppet modelled on a Pudelpointer, built by Jim Henson's Creature Shop and performed and voiced by Brian Henson. The series later continued with the spin-off The Storyteller: Greek Myths.
