Synopsis
In a wuxia-style fantasy world, a brother-and-sister pair of sacred guardians is besieged by the Xuan Gui Zong sect, servants of Miè Tiān Hǎi, who covets the legendary Tiān Xíng Jiàn sword in their possession. Various wandering swordsmen, including the solitary Shāng Bù Huàn, are drawn into the conflict.
Context & Trivia
A co-production between Japan's Nitroplus and Good Smile Company and Taiwan's century-old Pili International Multimedia, specialists in budaixi (southern Chinese/Taiwanese glove puppetry). Japanese writer Gen Urobuchi wrote the story specifically for Pili's puppet style, and it is filmed entirely live with glove puppets and practical effects on a physical set — not stop-motion, despite common confusion — with backgrounds and effects added digitally in post-production. Veteran Pili puppeteers such as Chia-Chang Hung (who operates protagonist Shāng Bù Huàn) and Jia-Shen Liao (several female leads) bring the puppets to life, dubbed by well-known Japanese voice actors who had never previously worked with puppets.
