Trailer
Synopsis
Immediately after the events of Season 4's finale, the long-simmering war between humanity and the demon realm erupts into full-scale conflict. As the Dōng Lí army and the Hù Yìn Shī fortify the Xiān Zhèn stronghold in the Wasteland of Spirits, Shāng Bù Huàn, Lǐn Xuě Yā and their allies venture into the demon realm to rescue their companion Làng Wū Yáo, who has been sacrificed as fuel for an infernal fortress. As long-buried secrets resurface — including the true nature of the Fú Róng Huī Dào blade and the return of the enigmatic sage Bái Lián — past, present and future collide in a climactic battle that decides the fate of both worlds, followed by an epilogue set three years later.
Context & Trivia
Like the rest of the franchise, the film is produced by PILI International Multimedia (Taiwan), a studio with over four decades of history in budaixi, traditional Taiwanese glove puppetry, in collaboration with Japan's Nitroplus and Good Smile Company. Character design was handled by Nitroplus (Shinov Mimori, Namaniku ATK and Nekokan Masshigura), while Good Smile Company is credited as modeling adviser, helping adapt the puppets toward the large-eyed look typical of Japanese animation. PILI's veteran puppeteers Chia-Chang Hung and Jia-Shen Liao have performed Shāng Bù Huàn and Lǐn Xuě Yā (plus several female leads), respectively, since the series began. The project originated in 2014, when writer Gen Urobuchi discovered PILI's puppetry at a Taiwanese comic convention and, together with the studio, decided to create an original story meant to introduce budaixi to anime audiences. As a nod to the production company, the sage Bái Lián, who reappears at the film's climax, is based on a recurring character from PILI's own puppet dramas.
