Beauty Is Embarrassing
Trailer
Synopsis
An artist traces his own path from underground comics in New York's East Village to the most recognizable television sets of the 1980s, moving through music videos and painting along the way. Puppets run through the whole arc: the film captures his early guerrilla street shows with a deliberately anti-Muppet aesthetic and the on-screen construction of an oversized puppet of President Lyndon B. Johnson built alongside his own son.
Context & Trivia
Wayne White came to puppetry at 21 with Andy Kaufman and punk rock as his reference points, building hard-faced figures in wood, rubber, papier-mâché, and cardboard for guerrilla shows in which characters copulated, vomited, and screamed obscenities—an explicit rejection of conventional Muppet sweetness. That radical approach eventually opened the door to children's television: first on «Mrs. Cabobble's Caboose» in Nashville, then on «Pee-wee's Playhouse», where he designed most of the puppets and sets, won three Emmy Awards for set design, and performed as the voice and puppeteer of Mr. Kite. The characters he built for that show include Chairy, Chicky Baby, Pterri, Floory, Randy, and Dirty Dog.
Beyond «Pee-wee's Playhouse», White designed the puppets Rex and Tex for «Shining Time Station» and contributed to «Beakman's World», building a career in which children's puppetry ran alongside personal artistic work. The documentary also captures the hands-on construction of an oversized Johnson puppet—cardboard boxes and scrap wood, built with his son—a sequence that distills his approach: the puppet as raw, expressive sculpture rather than polished product. The opening title sequence animates puppet versions of White himself across various locations, weaving in original illustrations and placing the language of puppetry at the center of the film.
