Synopsis

Deep beneath the Earth, the Fraggles, a fun-loving community of furry creatures, live in an interconnected cave system called Fraggle Rock. They share their world with the tiny, industrious Doozers, who build edible structures, and the giant, often terrifying Gorgs. The adventures of a group of Fraggles (Gobo, Mokey, Wembley, Boober, and Red) are intertwined with the explorations of Uncle Traveling Matt in "Outer Space" (the human world), from where he sends postcards to his nephew Gobo.

Context & Trivia

Created by Jim Henson, "Fraggle Rock" was an international co-production between Canada, the United Kingdom, and the United States, with the ambitious goal of entertaining a global audience and fostering an appreciation for diversity, empathy, and community. The series features several puppet species: the Fraggles, Doozers, and Gorgs, all designed and built by The Jim Henson Company. The main puppeteers for the original series included Jerry Nelson (Gobo Fraggle, Pa Gorg, Marjory the Trash Heap), Dave Goelz (Boober Fraggle, Uncle Traveling Matt), Steve Whitmire (Wembley Fraggle, Sprocket the Dog), Kathryn Mullen (Mokey Fraggle, Cotterpin Doozer), and Karen Prell (Red Fraggle). The show was notable for its use of hand-and-rod puppetry and creature suits for the Gorgs, demonstrating how puppetry could address serious issues like prejudice, personal identity, and social conflict in an accessible way for all ages.
