Synopsis

The Muppets, led by Kermit the Frog and Clifford, attempt to produce a weekly variety show on their own television channel, KMUP. Each episode features a principal guest star and a series of comedic sketches, while chaos unfolds backstage in the studio. The series includes parodies of popular television programs and introduces both classic Muppet characters and new additions.

Context & Trivia

Muppets Tonight was a continuation of The Muppet Show, set in a television studio rather than a theater, and originally aired on ABC before being rerun on the Disney Channel. The series was created by Jim Henson Productions and aimed to revitalize the Muppet franchise for a new generation. It introduced several new Muppet characters who went on to appear in subsequent productions, such as Pepe the King Prawn, Johnny Fiama, Sal Minella, Bobo the Bear, and Dr. Phil van Neuter. Clifford, a character first seen on The Jim Henson Hour, took on the role of the show's host, with Kermit the Frog serving as producer. Key puppeteers included Kevin Clash (Clifford, Mulch, Craniac), Steve Whitmire (Kermit the Frog, Rizzo the Rat, Beaker, Bean Bunny), Frank Oz (Miss Piggy, Fozzie Bear, Animal, Sam the Eagle), Dave Goelz (Gonzo, Beauregard, Dr. Bunsen Honeydew, Bill the Bubble Guy), Brian Henson (Nigel), and Bill Barretta (Pepe the King Prawn, Johnny Fiama, Bobo the Bear, Big Mean Carl). The series is notable for being the last television series to star the Muppets characters until 2015.
