Created by Jim Henson, "The Muppet Show" revolutionized how puppetry was captured and presented in video media. Although Henson had found success with the Muppets on "Sesame Street," American television networks initially rejected his pitch for a variety show aimed at a more adult audience. British producer Lew Grade expressed enthusiasm and agreed to co-produce the series for the UK's ITV network. The series was produced and recorded at ATV Elstree Studios in Borehamwood, Hertfordshire, England. The Muppets in "The Muppet Show" were primarily hand puppets, voiced by the puppeteers operating them. Don Sahlin served as the primary designer and builder of the Muppets from 1963 to 1978, and is credited with refining the look most associated with the characters, characterized by their spheroid heads and large mouths. Other puppet designers who influenced the Muppet look include Michael K. Frith, Caroly Wilcox, Bonnie Erickson, Ed Christie, Rollie Krewson, and Kirk Thatcher. Sets were built at least four feet above floor level, and puppeteers used television monitors to constantly check the position and movement of the puppets, ensuring excellent mouth synchronization. The principal group of performers included Jim Henson (Kermit the Frog, Rowlf the Dog, Dr. Teeth, The Swedish Chef), Frank Oz (Miss Piggy, Fozzie Bear, Animal, Sam the Eagle), Jerry Nelson (Floyd Pepper, Count von Count, Robin the Frog), Dave Goelz (Gonzo, Zoot, Dr. Bunsen Honeydew), and Richard Hunt (Scooter, Janice, Beaker). Steve Whitmire joined the cast in the third season in 1978. The show was groundbreaking for its syndicated variety format starring a troupe of puppets, blending humor, satire, and musical performances with a rotating lineup of celebrity guest stars.
