Big Bag was a pioneering series for Cartoon Network, marking its first foray into preschool programming and live-action content. The main puppet characters, Chelli (a patchwork dog) and Bag (a talking sack), were created by The Jim Henson Company, with Chelli designed by Ed Eyth and built by Rollie Krewson. In the second season, a new humanoid puppet character named Sofie was introduced. The series also featured two anthropomorphic sock puppets, Lyle and Argyle, who worked as stockroom boys and often interacted with the main cast. Puppeteer Joey Mazzarino performed Chelli and Lyle, while Rickey Boyd brought Bag and Argyle to life. Alice Dinnean performed Sofie. The program was designed to be interactive, encouraging children to participate with household items, such as using a sock as a hand puppet or a cardboard tube as a telescope. Notably, Elmo from Sesame Street made a crossover appearance in one episode, where it was revealed that he and Chelli were pen pals.
