Lipton Iced Tea TV Commercial, Lipton Helps the Muppets iSpottv
Trailer
Synopsis
Miss Piggy has prepared a meal for the Muppets, but Animal has a complaint: the water has no flavor. Kermit arrives with a pitcher of Lipton Iced Tea, singing a riff on his 'Be More Tea' song, and the group ends up toasting around the table. The puppet characters carry every beat of the spot, from Animal's chaos to the shared satisfaction at the close.
Context & Trivia
This spot accompanies the flagship commercial of Lipton's global 'Be More Tea' campaign, launched in 2014 with an investment of over 40 million dollars by Unilever and debuting on television during the Academy Awards. The central piece—available in 60- and 90-second versions—follows Kermit through a New York City populated almost entirely by Animal puppets; this picnic spot works as its domestic counterpart. Both pieces were released as a cross-promotion with 'Muppets Most Wanted' and featured the reintroduction of a Baby Animal puppet built specifically for the occasion, based on his classic 'Muppet Babies' design.
Visual effects production for the flagship ad was handled by Framestore, with Ben Cronin as VFX supervisor and David Mellor as head of 3D at the New York studio. The team started with just seven physical Animal puppets—shot at Universal Studios—and digitally multiplied them to fill entire city scenes with hundreds of copies; background and mid-ground Animals were CGI renders composited into set extensions. The Disney Muppets performing crew on set was captained by Bill Barretta and included Eric Jacobson, Steve Whitmire, Peter Linz, Mike Quinn, Alice Dinnean, Michelan Sisti, Bruce Lanoil, and Julianne Buescher.
One of the most telling behind-the-scenes details is that the performers kept their characters alive throughout the shoot: Kermit tried to eat the laser distance meter and Animal took notes alongside the first assistant director without breaking character. That commitment to in-character performance, combined with the technical challenge of digitally replicating physical puppets at massive scale, makes this campaign a lasting reference point for the integration of traditional puppetry with contemporary VFX.
