Synopsis

Young Jim Hawkins, along with his friends Gonzo and Rizzo, embarks on an exciting search for pirate treasure after inheriting a map. Aboard the Hispaniola, under the command of Captain Smollett (Kermit the Frog), Jim befriends the cook, Long John Silver (Tim Curry), unaware that he is a pirate with his own plans for the treasure. The adventure is complicated by betrayals and the appearance of the Boar Queen, Benjamina Gunn (Miss Piggy), on Treasure Island.

Context & Trivia

Muppet Treasure Island is the fifth Muppet feature film and the second produced after the death of Muppets creator Jim Henson. Brian Henson, Jim Henson's son, directed the film, continuing the family's legacy in puppetry. The film is a musical adaptation of Robert Louis Stevenson's classic novel "Treasure Island," with the Muppets playing supporting roles alongside live-action actors. Key Muppet performers include Dave Goelz (Gonzo, Waldorf, Dr. Bunsen Honeydew), Steve Whitmire (Rizzo the Rat, Kermit the Frog, Beaker), Frank Oz (Miss Piggy, Fozzie Bear, Sam the Eagle, Animal), and Jerry Nelson (Statler, Lew Zealand, Floyd Pepper, Mad Monty, Blind Pew, Old Tom). Kevin Clash and Bill Barretta also contributed as puppeteers. Initially, Gonzo and Rizzo were intended to play Jim and Hawkins, but the studio opted for a human Jim Hawkins to maintain the emotional core of the movie. Over 400 puppets were used in the production. Michael K. Frith, who influenced the Muppet look, designed darker, warty characters for this film, reminiscent of puppets he designed for the "Land of Gorch" sketches on Saturday Night Live.
