Muppets from Space is the sixth Muppet feature film and the first since Jim Henson's death to have an original Muppet-focused plot. It is also the only Muppet film not to be a musical, instead featuring a soundtrack of classic soul and funk songs. The film centers on Gonzo, a character whose species has always been a mystery, and explores his quest to discover his origins. During production, veteran Muppet performer Frank Oz was unavailable for most of the shooting due to scheduling conflicts with his directing career. As a result, his characters Miss Piggy, Fozzie Bear, Animal, and Sam Eagle were performed on set by other puppeteers, with Oz later dubbing the voices in post-production. Peter Linz performed Miss Piggy, John Kennedy performed Fozzie Bear and Sam Eagle, and Rickey Boyd performed Animal on set. The film is also notable as the last Muppet film to involve Frank Oz and Jerry Juhl, and the last theatrically released Muppet film to be produced by Jim Henson Pictures before the franchise was acquired by The Walt Disney Company in 2004.
