Directed by Brian Henson in his feature directorial debut, "The Muppet Christmas Carol" was the first Muppet film produced after the deaths of creator Jim Henson in 1990 and puppeteer Richard Hunt in 1992. The film is dedicated to both. Steve Whitmire took over the role of Kermit the Frog, a character Jim Henson had previously performed, making his debut as Kermit in this film. Michael Caine, who plays Ebenezer Scrooge, approached his role with complete seriousness, as if performing with the Royal Shakespeare Company, a choice that director Brian Henson stated elevated the entire production. The film is notable for being the first Muppet film where a human is the main protagonist. Although it is a comedic and musical adaptation, it closely follows Charles Dickens' original story, with Gonzo portraying Dickens as the narrator, assisted by Rizzo the Rat. The puppets for the Ghosts of Christmas Past, Present, and Yet to Come were unique designs for the film. The Ghost of Christmas Past, performed by Karen Prell and Robert Tygner, was filmed in a water tank to achieve its ethereal movement. The Ghost of Christmas Present was a life-size puppet, operated by an actor from within, with a puppeteer controlling the eyes and mouth using robotics. One song, "When Love Is Gone," was cut from the original American theatrical release by Jeffrey Katzenberg, then-chairman of Walt Disney Studios, who argued it would not appeal to young viewers. However, the song was later reinstated in home video releases and on Disney+ starting in 2022.
