Rod Puppets
A rod puppet is a figure manipulated with one or more rigid rods. Depending on the design, a central rod may support the head or body, while other rods control the arms and, less often, the legs, hands, or facial mechanisms.
There is no single standard arrangement. Some rod puppets are operated from below, others from behind or from the side. In certain models, the puppeteer puts one hand inside the figure's body and uses the other to operate the arms. In others, rods control the entire figure externally. The technique should therefore not be defined as an obligatory combination of an internal hand and external controls.
Rods transmit broad, clearly readable movements, keep the figure at some distance from the performer, and make it possible to work with characters of many sizes. The result depends on the rigidity and length of each rod and on where it is attached. A rod fixed to the wrist produces a different gesture from one connected to the elbow or forearm.
One of the best-known traditions is wayang golek from West Java, Indonesia. Its three-dimensional wooden figures are supported by a central rod and have articulated arms controlled by thinner rods. The dalang does more than manipulate the puppets: this performer also narrates, plays the characters, and directs the course of the performance. UNESCO includes the various forms of wayang, among them wayang golek and the shadow theatre wayang kulit, in Indonesia's intangible cultural heritage.
Contemporary theatre uses rods in everything from small tabletop puppets to large figures for street theatre, visual productions, and screen work. The technique is also combined with mouth puppets, masks, and direct manipulation.
In summary: a rod puppet is identified by the one or more rods that transmit the puppeteer's movement to the figure or to particular parts of it.
