Titelles de boca articulada
Un titella de boca és una figura amb una boca que el titellaire obre i tanca directament amb la mà. Normalment, els dits controlen la part superior del cap i el polze mou la mandíbula inferior. Aquesta configuració permet sincronitzar amb precisió el moviment de la boca amb la veu del personatge.
També es coneix com a titella bocut, titella de boca articulada o, popularment, titella de tipus Muppet. Tanmateix, Muppet no és el nom genèric de la tècnica, sinó el dels personatges i la marca creada per Jim Henson. Els Muppets van popularitzar aquest sistema a la televisió, però no el van inventar: l'Enciclopèdia Mundial de les Arts de la Marioneta documenta antecedents en titelles de guant i figures amb mandíbules mòbils.
En molts dissenys, una mà controla el cap i la boca, mentre que l'altra manipula una o dues varetes unides a les mans del personatge. Aquesta combinació s'anomena en anglès hand-and-rod puppet i en català es pot descriure com a titella de mà i varetes. No tots els titelles de boca utilitzen varetes: alguns tenen braços manipulats directament, mans vives o mecanismes interns.
La sincronització labial no consisteix a obrir la boca mecànicament amb cada síl·laba. El moviment ha de seguir el ritme, els accents i les pauses de la interpretació. Davant la càmera també són essencials l'orientació de la mirada, la respiració corporal i la posició del cap. Per la seva expressivitat en primer pla, aquesta tècnica s'utilitza especialment en televisió, publicitat, cinema i continguts infantils.
Jim Henson va tenir un paper decisiu en el seu desenvolupament audiovisual. El primer Kermit es va construir el 1955 per a Sam and Friends amb un abric de llana, tela texana i ulls fets amb pilotes de ping-pong. El seu cap flexible, sense farciment rígid, permetia que els moviments de la mà modifiquessin subtilment l'expressió del personatge.
