口を動かすパペット
口遣い人形（マウスパペット）は、人形遣いが手で口を直接開閉する人形である。通常は指で頭部の上側を支え、親指で下顎を動かす。この構造により、登場人物の声と口の動きを細かく合わせることができる。
英語圏では mouth puppet や moving-mouth puppet、俗に「マペット型」とも呼ばれる。ただし、Muppet は技法の一般名ではなく、ジム・ヘンソンが生み出したキャラクター群およびブランドの名称である。マペットはこの方式をテレビで広く知らしめたが、発明したわけではない。『世界人形劇芸術百科事典』には、手遣い人形や可動式の顎をもつ人形という先例が記録されている。
多くの人形では、片手で頭と口を操作し、もう一方の手で人形の手につながれた一本または二本のロッドを扱う。英語ではこの組み合わせを hand-and-rod puppet と呼ぶ。もっとも、すべての口遣い人形にロッドがあるわけではない。腕を直接操作するもの、人間の手をそのまま人形の手として使うもの、内部機構を備えたものもある。
リップシンクとは、一音節ごとに機械的に口を開けることではない。動きは台詞のリズム、アクセント、間に沿わせる必要がある。映像では、視線の方向、身体の呼吸感、頭の角度も欠かせない。クローズアップで豊かな表情を出せるため、テレビ、広告、映画、子ども向け作品で特に多く使われる。
ジム・ヘンソンは、この技法を映像表現として発展させるうえで大きな役割を果たした。最初のカーミットは1955年、テレビ番組『Sam and Friends』のために、ウールのコートとデニム生地、ピンポン玉の目を使って作られた。硬い詰め物のない柔軟な頭部だったため、手のわずかな動きが表情の変化として現れた。
要点：口遣い人形は、可動する顎を手で操作し、声、視線、身振りをカメラの前で一体化できる点に特徴がある。
