口动式木偶
张合嘴木偶的嘴由木偶师直接用手控制开合。通常，手指操纵头部上半部分，拇指带动下颌。这样的结构可以让嘴部动作与角色声音精确同步。
这类木偶也可称为活动嘴木偶，民间还常说布偶秀式木偶或Muppet 式木偶。不过，Muppet 并不是这门技术的通用名称，而是吉姆·亨森（Jim Henson）创造的一组角色及其品牌。Muppets 让这套操演方式在电视上广为人知，却并非其发明者。《世界木偶艺术百科全书》记载了更早的手偶以及活动下颌木偶。
许多木偶由一只手控制头部和嘴，另一只手操纵连接在角色双手上的一根或两根细杆。英语把这种组合称为 hand-and-rod puppet，中文可描述为手杆木偶。并非所有张合嘴木偶都有操纵杆；有些木偶的手臂由木偶师直接操纵，有些采用真人手，还有一些装有内部机构。
口型同步不是机械地逐个音节开嘴。嘴部动作要跟随表演的节奏、重音和停顿。面对镜头时，视线方向、身体的呼吸感和头部姿态同样重要。由于近景表现力很强，这门技术尤其常见于电视、广告、电影和儿童节目。
吉姆·亨森对它在影视中的发展影响深远。第一只科米蛙（Kermit）于1955年为《Sam and Friends》制作，材料包括一件羊毛外套、牛仔布和乒乓球做成的眼睛。它的头部柔软，没有硬质填充物，因此木偶师可以用细微的手部动作改变角色神情。
