Klappmaulfiguren
Bei einer Klappmaulpuppe öffnet und schließt der Puppenspieler den Mund der Figur unmittelbar mit der Hand. Meist steuern die Finger den oberen Teil des Kopfes, während der Daumen den Unterkiefer bewegt. So lässt sich die Mundbewegung genau auf die Stimme der Figur abstimmen.
Im Deutschen sind unter anderem die Bezeichnungen Klappmaulpuppe, Handpuppe mit beweglichem Mund und umgangssprachlich Muppet-artige Puppe gebräuchlich. Muppet ist jedoch kein allgemeiner Fachbegriff, sondern bezeichnet die von Jim Henson geschaffenen Figuren und die zugehörige Marke. Die Muppets machten dieses Spielprinzip im Fernsehen populär, erfanden es aber nicht. Die World Encyclopedia of Puppetry Arts dokumentiert Vorläufer bei Handpuppen und Figuren mit beweglichem Kiefer.
Bei vielen Konstruktionen führt eine Hand Kopf und Mund, während die andere eine oder zwei Stäbe an den Händen der Figur bewegt. Im Englischen heißt diese Kombination hand-and-rod puppet; auf Deutsch lässt sie sich als Hand-Stab-Puppe beschreiben. Nicht jede Klappmaulpuppe besitzt solche Stäbe. Manche Figuren haben direkt geführte Arme, sogenannte lebende Hände oder eingebaute Mechanismen.
Gutes Lippenspiel bedeutet nicht, den Mund mechanisch bei jeder Silbe zu öffnen. Die Bewegung folgt Rhythmus, Betonungen und Pausen der Darstellung. Vor der Kamera sind außerdem Blickrichtung, angedeutete Atmung und Kopfhaltung entscheidend. Weil die Technik in Nahaufnahmen besonders ausdrucksstark ist, kommt sie häufig im Fernsehen, in Werbung, Film und Kinderformaten zum Einsatz.
Jim Henson prägte ihre audiovisuelle Weiterentwicklung maßgeblich. Der erste Kermit entstand 1955 für Sam and Friends aus einem Wollmantel, Jeansstoff und Augen aus Tischtennisbällen. Der flexible, nicht starr ausgestopfte Kopf erlaubte es, den Gesichtsausdruck durch feine Bewegungen der Hand zu verändern.
